Alligator and Crocodile skins are available in a wide variety of colors and in two primary finishes, the "CLASSIC" high-gloss finish, or the more natural "SAFARI" semi-gloss/matte finish. Your choice of finish should depend on the application and type of luxury item.
CLASSIC finish is the more processed, smooth shiny patent leather look that historically was associated with the finest quality exotic leather luxury items. To achieve this high gloss, a natural protein (typically albumen or raw egg whites) is polished into the skin s surface under high pressure. A high-pressure glazing jack utilizes a hard smooth object to compress and smooth the skin s surface and produce a high gloss shine. The result is a smooth, high-gloss finish, that in normal use should last for many years. This process is favored by many European manufacturers as it actually expands the skin and can eliminate otherwise visible imperfections. While this shiny surface looks great and appears durable because of its hard surface, it is difficult to fold/bend without marring with small wrinkles. The Classic finish is well suited for flat/gently-rounded surfaced luxury items that do not require tight bending, and that are protected from abrasion; examples are the a man s dress/suit belt, a breast-pocket wallet or a wallet Typically used in an office environment, a lady s evening handbag, and other items that are carried protected within a purse or briefcase (business card holders, writing journals etc).
The SAFARI finish ranges from semi-glossy to matte in appearance; it is softer to the touch and significantly more durable. Safari finish is the result of low-speed, low-pressure buffing using a combination of natural oils and waxes. Because the Safari finish has not been subjected to heavy pressures, the leather remains soft and supple and the surface retains the natural scale pattern and minor imperfections characteristic of the alligator or crocodile. The Safari finish can be flexed repeatedly with little or no signs of wear, and is much more resilient to the abrasion that would rapidly dull and eventually tear the Classic leather. Since the color penetrates deep into the leather and the surface is naturally irregular, scratches to the Safari finish are less apparent. The Safari finish is best suited to luxury items that need to be flexible and/or are used on a daily basis such as casual wallets, casual belts, purses or a primary handbag.
Over the years, our clients have shown a growing preference for the Safari finish, such that roughly half of the products we offer have a Safari finish, or a somewhat more processed Safari finish that can achieve a nice gloss shine (not as glossy as the high-gloss Classic Finish). In addition to the practical wear advantages, the more natural look associated with the Safari finish is somewhat more difficult to imitate than the patent leather look of the Classic finish.

"WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALLIGATOR AND CROCODILE LEATHER/SKIN?".... 1) They are similar in many ways, including their classic good looks, relative exclusivity and their ability to look great thru many years of service....
2)While it varies from skin to skin and from what part of the body the skin comes from, generally, in regard to the skins used in wallets, belts and other accessories, "alligator" skin is much nicer (with more symmetrical scale patterns, with thicker, softer, smoother, more three-dimensional skin) than the typical skin "crocodile". Unfortunately, many stores label a skin as "alligator", when it is really some type of crocodile. This mislabeling is most often applied to the most common type of crocodile, which is the caiman from South America. While caiman skins can be of very good quality, they can often be identified by the many small pits in their scales; and since they typically come from relatively small animals (3 to 5 feet long; compared to 6 to 12 feet for a typical alligator) the pattern and size of the scales transitions rapidly over the area of the wallet or belt; this rapid transition can be a good thing if you want to see the shape of the crocodile s head/tail/body in the wallet or belt.
3) Although there is essentially only one species of alligator, (the "American Alligator" or "alligator mississippiensis"), there are a dozen types of crocodiles, in varied shapes and sizes found all over the world. In addition, while alligator skins are generally preferred over crocodile skins, the finest crocodile skins (from large Nile or Australian Saltwater Crocs) are the equal of the best American Alligator skins. Nile Crocodiles are also unique in that their scales remain relatively small and are less variable based upon the size of the donor animal (even on a large 10 to 14 Nile Croc, the scales along the belly remain less that ½ square; compared to an Alligator of the same size with belly scales of well-over one inch square). For this reason, many people prefer the consistent size and intricate detail of the Nile Croc scales, particularly on wallets and smaller purses.
4) In addition to the species of alligator/crocodile, the quality of the skin varies from animal to animal and from what part of the body the skin come from. For smooth-skinned items, the premium sections include the central belly and throat areas where the scales are the largest, the most symmetrical around the center-line of the belly, and the scales are at least somewhat rectangular in shape. The sides can also be very good quality; skin from the sides has scales that are more rounded in shape and the skin is a bit thinner. The least desirable section is the tail (which can represent 50% of the animal's length); the tail skin is stiffer, has more widely spaced scales, and is more heavily scared (scarring is normal and validates that the skin is genuine). Portions of the tail are suitable for internal or hidden sections of a wallet or purse, or for belts.

We utilize a number of species of crocodile : Any crocodile products with any mention of Australia or Aussie are Saltwater Crocodile or Estuarine Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus); Products identified as "Nile Crocodile" are Crocodylus niloticus. All other "crocodile" items are Brown Caiman Crocodile (Ciaman Crocodilus Fuscus). All Ostrich items (Struthio camelus) are either farm-raised or taken from non-endangered populations. All of our "Manta Ray", "Devil Ray" or "Sting Ray" items are made from either Dasyatidae Stingray, Dasyatis Bleekeri, or banded whiptail stingray (dasyatis uarnak).
